From the Archive — September 2025

Dear Friend,
Ah, September, that most liminal of months when, in many places, summer begins to tiptoe away, while autumn tugs its sweaters down from the top shelf, getting ready.
Except. It’s not quite like that here in the lowcountry of South Carolina, not yet. My first September here, and I don’t quite know how it will feel. Cooler, yes, but not the crisp-cool of upstate New York (the last home), where the air arrives like a sharpened pencil, ready to write a story we haven’t heard yet but somehow know, like a Bluegrass song imbued with centuries of life in every note.
Will I miss the earthy scent, the faint wash of gold and russet on the trees, day trips to Vermont and Massachusetts, or north to Lake Placid and Montreal?
Yes. This much I know.
But in the space left open by those things, I’ll look forward to when the beaches clear of summer people, days when miles of empty sand stretch out in either direction.
Those cardigan-on-a-hook-by-the-door days.
When I think about it, right now feels like the perfect time to launch this mail club, on the sun-drenched threshold of a season I love most, with its longer shadows and the promise of letters waiting in the post.
I’m thrilled to welcome you to the first edition of The Prose & Post Society from Six-Penny

Here’s to a wonderful September,
x
Jennifer
